Upcoming Videogames!

Be ready to die, over and over, and over.

As you may or may not know, this blog is also about videogames! No, really, I'm not making this up. Go look at the name of the blog. Yes, it has a name. No, it's not miettechan.com. So I will talk about the games I'm anticipating for this year starting with Dark Souls.

That guy got bored.

What Is it

Dark Souls is an action-adventure type of game with some RPG elements, like leveling up your stats and such.  It is made by the creators of Demon's Souls. It is meant to be somewhat of a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls, which was infamous for it's difficulty.

Well that's a pretty image...

Why I'm anticipating it

I enjoyed it's predecessor very much, no, enjoyed is not the right word for it. There's this sense of immense pressure while playing it. You're trying not to die with all your might, and when you manage to persevere all that pressure and angst turns into this huge satisfaction. Only to get killed again right after. This combined with it's dark story and imagery is why it's predecessor is so appealing. Dark Souls, from what I've seen, is more of that mixed anxiety/satisfaction feeling, but expanded and improved.

If you're a masochist If you're up for a challenge and you can handle a game that doesn't hold your hand then you might like this as well. You might also like this if you have a sense for exploration and collection, as there's a new huge interconnected world and many armors and weapons to uncover and use. Dark souls is schedueld to be released October 4th in North america for both PS3 an Xbox 360.

Pew pewNext up is Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-1NFvScbOo]

What Is it

It is the next installement of Ace Combat by "Project Aces" of Bandai-Namco. It is an "arcade combat flight" game according to Wikipedia, but I think it's more of a here's-a-plane-go-shoot-down-all-those-bastards-oh-crap-I'm-out-of-missiles-now-I-gotta-use-my-crappy-Gatling-gun type of game.

New over-the-shoulder camera makes stuff more actiony

Why I'm anticipating it

I've played a couple of the Ace Combat games before. Each of them has very dramatic and engeging story-telling. You always feel very heroic as you mow down enemies, bring down evil dictators, take out super weapons and the like. Miette compares Ace Combat 5 to Gundam. I'm expecting this new installment to be as interesting as the last games. There is however very big changes to this new one. They changed writers and are basing it on the real world. They are trying to appeal to the Call of Duty demographic it seems. I don't think it's bad, but I hope they didn't change the core of what makes Ace Combat fun while doing so.

New "next gen" effects for damage and stuff.

Why you might also be interested

Ace Combat is about shooting down stuff and saving the world. If you like to save the world you might want to look into this game too. The developers also were talking about making the game more engaging by adding an over the shoulder type of camera. They were saying that, usually, in this type of game what you spend most of the time looking at is your radar so they wanted to amend that by adding it. Assault Horizon is scheduled for October 11th in North America for PS3 and Xbox 360.

COD 3

Next is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Since It's already stupidly popular I'll just skip to why I'm anticipating it.

Random war scene A

Why I'm anticipating it

COD is just plain fun to play with friends and enemies. I'm looking forward to the new guns and maps. Can't wait to shot stuff. Also, I find the story interesting. It comes out November 8th for PS3 and Xbox 360. Anyone else planning on getting this on the PS3? Let's play together!

Now for some Mario.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaiv-Br1PgE]

What Is it

Super Mario 3D Land is a new Mario installment for the 3DS.

I better get some fireworks!

Why I'm anticipating it

This game is somewhere between Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros., And Mario 3. It mixes the gameplay of Mario Galaxy with some side-scrolling levels that you would expect from old-school Mario. It also has tanooki Mario back! I'm really looking forward to how they will incorporate all these things in the final game.

Mario show's off the latest fashion

Why you might also be interested

Mario games are usually really well designed, game play wise. So this is a game for anyone really. If you like platformers, like having fun and have a 3DS handy, you'll want to check this one out. It comes out November 13th for the 3DS.

One of my all-time favorites, Zelda!

What Is it

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword is the next Zelda game for the Wii. It uses the Wii's motion plus add-on for the wiimote. I'm a little worried of that part since game play relies on precise slashes, so I hope they tweak the controls to be just right. The art style of this one is somewhere between the more realistic style of Twilight Princess and the cell shaded one of Wind Waker, looks interesting.

Why I'm anticipating it

I've been a big fan of the Zelda series since I was a kid. I just love the sense of exploration and the colorful worlds where they are set. As far as I can tell this one is no different. The fact that that you use giant chieckens cuckoos mysetious birds to fly around makes me think this world is plenty big to explore. There's also the new item upgrade mechanic that seems interesting that I'm looking foward to.

Why you might also be interested

Zelda is all about exploring big worlds and fighting your way though a bunch of dungeons. If you like sword fights, gadgets, and puzzles you might want to keep an eye on this game too. It comes out November 20th for the Wii.

Mario Kart!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tqoRDHh3Gw]

What Is it

Mario Kart 7 is the next in the Mario Kart series for the 3DS, but this time it has underwater racing and air gliders! And it's in threee deeee (3D).

Why I'm anticipating it

Apart form the races and the usual stuff, what makes Mario Kart sadistic fun is the multiplayer. Whether it's shooting down your friends with a turtle shell right before they cross the finish line, using the infamous blue shell on people or just smacking them aside with a heavy character, Mario Kart has always been one fucked up entertaining game for me.

Why you might also be interested

If you have friends to torture play with this might be a game worth looking into. Mario Kart has been one of the best multiplayer or party games out there and this one seems to be coming along nicely. Friendships end December 4th on the 3DS.

That's it for this the games I'm looking forward the most this year. Does it coincide with yours? Are you looking forward to any other games?

orz I think I went a little over board this time...

... I failed horribly at not spending money. Then again it has been a couple of months since my last loot so stuff did pile up.

On the figure side I got a couple of Touhou girls.

Hopefully you still remember Aya's lovely intro with that "special report" of hers. Speaking of which that sequel I had planed is way over due by now.

After hoping to buy her for almost a year I'm overjoyed to finally own Marisa and look forward to taking several pictures featuring her like last time.

Did I mention I'm a pretty big Precure fan? While the original pair is what got me into the franchise and love those two, it's Heartcatch Precure that became my favorite show.

Heartcatch is what you get when someone goes all out when making a Precure show. I mean just look at the transformation sequence, so awesome.

That 100th post I was planning was gonna feature them but alas, a shipping delay threw that out the window. Not bother, I will just make that post in the near future.

There was a sale recently with everybody's "favorite" game retailer and picked up a few titles I wanted for a while for cheap.

Picked up a couple of NISA published RPGS.

I picked up Neptunia based solely in it's premise and pretty characters.

An anthropomorphizing of the current console wars, quirky RPG genre savvy characters, moesome girls, and a boat load of gaming references. Sadly enough this game wont blow anyone away, enjoyable for me but it does have it's share of problems.

Also picked Ar tonelico 3, I heard positive opinions about the series so I thought to give it a try.

Picked Ar tonelico 2, while not necessary I did read playing the previous Ar tonelico games would increase my enjoyment of the third. Still need to get a hold of the first.

Finally managed to find a copy of Yakuza 2, I look forward to playing it so I can finally play Yakuza 3 and 4.

Bought Breakdown an FPS, by Namco, for the original Xbox. There was probably a really interesting reason why I wanted to buy this, that reason escapes me right now.

Lastly, bought Trauma Center Second Opinion, a remake of the original on the DS. I'm hoping the Wii version has a toned difficulty as I was never able to finish the original.

On the hand held side it's all DS titles.

Bought Pokemon White, I wonder why thought. I just don't have the same drive as a kid to finish a Pokemon game anymore. Just Diamond took me four years and over 80 game play hours. Who knows how long Soul Silver will and when will I get to White.

Picked up Atelier Annie pretty much on a comment made by Radiant about it. Starfy a Kirby like platformer I been curious about for a while too.

After Persona 3 and 4 made me an Atlus fan I been wanting to play their more typical RPG experience of which Strange Journey is a perfect example. The game comes bundled in with a soundtrack CD which is pretty nice.

Got myself Sigma Star Saga from the good folks at Wayforward. A unique mix of an RPG and a shmup.

Now that I finally got a job, one of the things that I want to do is to get rid of my fansubs and replace them by their licensed releases where applicable.

To start off I went with the always awesome FLCL, the blu ray looks great.

The best for last, I splurged and bought a 3DS. If you own one and want to do a friend code exchange I would be more than happy.

I would be feeling pretty miserable at the amount of money I spend in a couple of months if it wasn't for the promise of a stable income. Yes, good thing for employment.

Twitter : )

I sure played a lot of games last year...

... and you know what? I don't think it was enough. That's the stack of games I finished last year.

Several things to mention, Halo and Perfect Dark are missing as I played the Xbox 360 digital versions of those games. While the Metroid Prime Trilogy is in the picture I only finished Metroid Prime but not 2 or 3. Peace Walker has an extra chapter to play through after the credits roll so your mileage may vary whether I finished that game or not.

In total, I finished 27 games last year, my personal best. Usually I finish about half or a little less than that number.

However, most of those games I bought this year but that's not all of the games I bought. Just take a look a my loot posts and see how many games I bought last year.

Plus, I have literally hundreds of games in my backlog. My backlog spans at least three generations, both consoles, handhelds and PC. The games spread across seven different consoles and three different handhelds.

That's why I said even though I never played as many games in one year before it was not nearly enough.

I seriously own and buy too many games. I wonder though, how much more would I buy if I didn't buy figures as well.

Twitter : )

I wont even bother complaining anymore!!!

Instead I will just happily talk about my latest loot.

First up the figures, pretty light this time around with only two figmas.

I'm happy to say my After School Teatime band is complete with the arrival of Azusa. Even if Mio and Yui kinda made me angry at their sudden sale at the beginning of the year.

I don't particularly like BRS but I did enjoy the OVA and was pleased to see it included with the figma. Now why did I buy BRS? Simple, you can't have Black Rock Shooter without Dead Master and vice versa.

Technically I only got one book this time the third volume of Otacool since I had Spicy Wolf volume 1 for a while. Just kept forgetting to include it in the pictures.

As far as Otacool 3 I liked this theme, workspaces around the world is pretty cool. Plus I got featured this time since unlike Otacool 1 and 2 I was able to participate.

I didn't wanna buy Spicy Wolf at first because of that cover fiasco and what not. I ended picking up the second volume on a whim so I decided to buy the first too. Rightsuf had the dust jacket with the original artwork so I bought it in the end.

I kinda wish it had been like the Haruhi novels, one version with the original cover and one with whatever the publisher wanted. I suppose the dust jacket approach is fine too.

I do however, wish there had been consistency. First volume has the original artwork on the jacket and not the novel itself. For the second volume it was reversed, dust jacket with western cover and original artwork on the novel itself.

I recently played through the story mode on BlazeBlue: Calamity Trigger and after becoming invested on all the characters and the cliffhanger ending I needed to play more. So, I went and bought Continuum Shift to continue the story.

The sequel added gameplay tweaks, stages, modes, characters and a continuation of the story. I played it through and look forward to the next game as well as the new DLC characters.

As far as Resonance of Fate I wanted to buy it since it was released but that month saw me buy Final Fantasy 13 and Yakuza 3 among other things making it not feasible at the time.

When Amazon had it for half price I jumped the gun and bought myself a copy.

On the Xbox side I picked up three games.

I been hearing many good things about Lost Odyssey lately so I got it used for a nice $10. Game is pretty much new so not bad when I see it for $30.

Battle Fantasia is a fighting game by Arc System Works, the developers behind Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Although available on PSN I wanted a physical copy plus it was originally made for the Xbox 360 in the first place.

Ah, updates are nice, Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT play just fine in my 360 unlike the one I tried them on before.

Should pick up an original Xbox one of these days.

For the PS2 I picked up Nightshade a spin off the well regarded Shinobi series from the Mega Drive/Genesis days.

Disaster Report is this interesting game where you make your way through a city wide disaster as several characters. Interestingly enough the actions of one character affects the ones that come after them. This game has a sequel in the form of Raw Danger on the PS2 and an announced third game on the PSP.

For the PSP I bought Valkyria Chronicles 2, sequel to the Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3. Just buy both games.

The PSP version has all the well designed gameplay of the original plus several new additions.

Yggdra Union originally released on the GBA and was ported to the PSP. Tactical RPG goodness on the go. If you buy Knights in the Nightmare for PSP you can get Yggdra Union as a free PSN download.

Finally, Sega Tennis 2k2. I see this pop up on worthwhile Dremacast games to play lists so I got it. For a buck, sealed.

It's tennis on the Dreamcast, nothing else I can say.

That's it for now anyways.

Recent Pick Ups

I have way too expensive hobbies.

Thank goodness for Christmas and Birthday money.

This is so far my accumulated loot for January and it's only mid way through the month.

First up is nendo Yui, after delays in pretty much every figure I had preordered for December Yui was the only one released on time.

Some of you might remember I bought Demon's Souls which had an empty case with no game disc. I was able to resolve the issue with Best Buy. Since they did not have the game in stock I was giving store credit and used that to get my self a copy of the awesome Bayonetta.

I decided to go for the 360 version as that was the one actually developed by Platinum Games.

Latter on I dropped by Gamestop and picked up a copy of Demon's Souls. Man is this game brutal, still awesome. Go pick up both games if you own a PS3 or Xbox 360 worth every penny.

Last week Amazon had Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest on sale being Nintendo and Squenix releases which tend no to drop in price I jumped at the opportunity to buy them both.

Finally in order to qualify for free shipping I added the 7th volume of Yotsuba&!. I'm so content Yen Press picked up the license and has published the new volumes. If you like slice of life manga go pick it up, in fact if you like manga period pick it up.

January is way too packed. I still got the Nanoha movie figmas and hopefully Alter's Exceed Mode Nanoha as well. Not to mention Reimu figma which will probably cost me a bit. I also bought Canaan figma and GSC's Instructor Unifrom Nanoha. At the end of the month there are also No More Heroes 2 and Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

At least I should have a break in February to save up for the March figure and game releases.
