Tiger & Bunny - the movie the 1st

This city has a cancer, the cancer is crime. For years a single sentinel has stood against it.

Heroes! Champions of justice that protect the innocent and weak!!! Champions of sponsors big and small!!!

This summer, an unlikely combination...

... a hot blooded veteran hero, a rookie hero with a cynical view on life...

... will be forced to put aside their differences...

... and become the greatest hero combination of all time!

Faced with different views, their sense of justice will be tested!

BUT THEN! An unexpected twist! A murder of a high ranking official! The prime suspect...

... a hero, in the wrong place at the wrong time. An innocent man, framed for a murder he did not commit.

Forced to battle against his former crime fighting comrades.

The bond between partners stretched and tested to the limits.

So, recently I listened to a podcast about Tiger & Bunny and I thought, hey this sounds interesting. So after getting over the yaoi bait stuff and my extreme weariness of anything western mainstream anime fans like, I watched the show. I liked it, quite a bit, I loved how it plays with the usual super heroes tropes both in how they are applied and subverted. My only complaints are the two hanging plots that were Lunatic and ouroboros.  I hope the movie and other stuff takes care of that.

Then, I bought the Tiger & Bunny figuarts and this idea happened.

One last thing, to the person who complained that I hadn't done a silly thing like this in a while, I hope you are happy now.

I'll catch your heart

This kinda stuff is too much work =_=... This post is on the image heavy side.

I'm sorry, I totally stole this one from you, it's fine since we are like buddies and stuff right? ... Right?

It was just so cool and Aya like that I ended liking too much.

Fastest yes, honest? Well that's questionable as always.

In case you forgot she is CNN9's field correspondent.

So, who wants to bet on the answer?

Robots or little girls of mass destruction?

Also, typo... sigh.

Hey, that description sounds familiar!

If you are a Touhou fan anyways.

Totally meaningless cameo...

Rumble?

So nostalgic, that totally dominated my childhood for a while. Among other things anyways, yay for the 90s!

While doing my silly crappy effects I came across this video compilation.

So awesome!

Saving people is not her job apparently. Who will save the city then?

Once again wanna guess? Another robot or little girls of mass destruction?

A challenger has appeared? Who could it be?

Dropped kicked with high heels... that must suck.

They did call out your attention, that's like a warning and stuff right? Besides who gives warnings when they attack someone?

Nana Mizuki voices her, she also voices a certain other magical girl by the way.

She is my favorite Precure ever.

Flowers are a big motif throughout Heartcatch Precure.

Let me talk about these two figures a bit. They are from Bandai's S.H.Figuarts line, I like them quite accurate to the show.

However, Bandai thought it would be a good idea to make their hair solid PVC. Because of that they are very top heavy and impossible to balance without using a stand. As you might or might not know, usually I either don't use them or hide them with different angles and other tricks.

In this case, that was impossible for me, not apparent at least with my limited time.

I really like Cure Marine, she so cute and spunky.

I somehow managed to miss that until it was pointed out to me. I wonder how I was like 20 something episodes in.

Hoh?

I bet getting kicked in the gut with high heels must also suck.

Yes, the Heartcatch girls totally gang up to beat up their enemies. Perfect example is the awesomeness that was the last battle with the big bad villain.

Nice dodge!

Too bad it was the only one.

Smart people? Why needlessly endanger yourself? Finish off your enemies quick.

That's why gloating villains never win, they always wait for the good guys to get up again.

Exactly!

Only good guys get a free turn. That's why they can transform, combine, call out their attacks and so on without getting attacked midway.

Sorry, this time your the bad guy Mighty Morphing Megazord. Hmm.. did that title also apply to the Megazord or only the rangers?

Crappy special effects start now, be warned.

Also some robot mutilation.

A similar thing happened in the show proper... no dismemberment there though.

By the way that's not blood, it's like Megazord oil or something.

Yes, Precure occasionally attack you with your own weapons and/or body parts.

Again, that's not blood.

Yes, once they beat you down and maim you Precure will typically use their finishing move on you.

Again, crappy special effects incoming.

Finishing move sequence part 1.

Part 2.

I really like this finishing move, it's pretty cool.

Part 3.

It gets even better with the third Heartcatch Precure.

Part 4.

That's supposed to be a fortissimo sign as in music and stuff I think.

Part 5.

They cover themselves in flower power(?) and shoot themselves at their enemy.

Part 6.

Usually their enemies end up watching helplessly as the Fortissimo approaches them.

Part 7.

Followed by promptly getting pierced by the Fortissimo.

Part 8.

The enemies heart is then captured by the Precure, thus the show name: Heartcatch Precure.

Part 9.

Yes, at the end the enemy blows up.

Hmm... now that I did a play by play of the Fortissimo, I can't help but find it a little messed up. Get's even better with the Shining Fortissimo and the Heartcatch Orchestra, the next two tiers of finishing moves.

Now then I will leave you off with the first Heartcatch ending.

This is my favorite Precure ending watched it every time, which means I watched it like 30 or so times by the time the second ending was used.

By the way Heartcatch is my favorite Precure show so far.

We are Pretty Cure!

Indeed they are.

This past year I become a really big fan of the long running Pretty Cure franchise.  In case you are not aware of it, Pretty Cure is a magical girl meta series encompassing seven shows, wiki has all the summaries if you are interested.

These two lovely ladies above are Cure White and Cure Black respectively from the original Pretty Cure show.

That show is actually available to be watched completely online thanks to Funimation over at their website. You should go check it out.

Pretty Cure surprised me, I truly expected some girly magical girl show. The usual fluffy storylines with an unwilling protagonist and so on.

I expected the battles to be more along the lines of the girls running around for a bit then finishing off the monster of the week with their finishing move, the same way every time. Something along the lines of good ol' Sailor Moon.

Boy was I wrong, these girls often take the initiative and attack first.

They kick, punch and throw their enemies around, attacking when there is an opening, not holding back at all. Once they beat the monster of the week or quirky mini boss squad member into submission then do they finish them off with their finishing move.

My friend put it best, this is not a magical girl show this is Kamen Rider with cute girls in frilly costumes.

One thing that I like, is how the shows usually have protagonists, not one but two or more.

The show wont focus on just one girl, it focuses on all of them. Gives them the spotlight both in the plot and battles. To put it simply, none of them is just a supporting role.

Going further along those lines, as all Pretty Cures are protagonists team work is a big aspect of the shows.

Take for example Cure Black and White, they can't transform or use their finishing attack alone, they need each other. The friendship and bonds that they form outside of battle in turn strengthens their prowess in battle.

This dynamic leads to what I think are the best two episodes of the show. When they go from being just Pretty Cure to becoming friends, when they clearly state that alone their power might not much but together they wont lose to anyone.

By the way, the two Precures are part of Bandai's newish line of articulated figures, S.H.Figuarts.

They are a big improvement over their previous lines of figures that had been released before.

The previous line was more than lacking in terms of quality and accuracy in appearance of the characters.

At the very least that's the impression I got from looking at Bandai's previous Cure Black and White.

As you hopefully can see in these pictures, Bandai has improved their figures. Both Cure Black and White look just as they do in the shows.

They do feel quite differently than figmas though, these S.H.Figuarts use more soft PVC instead of its more firm variant as in figmas.

I also found removing the hair pieces and faces much more trouble some than figmas. As instead of simply snapping on and off these pieces have a wedge that takes a bit of force to remove or put in.

Over all though, I am quite pleased with the quality and build of the figures and will probably buy more from this line.

After all Cure Blossom and Cure Marine from HeartCatch Pretty Cure! are scheduled to release in January.

One last thing, man, setting up the pictures for this post took a bit more work and time than I expected.
