So I bought the Denpa Onna Blu-rays...

... and that got me wondering, how many of you my lovely figure loving readers do you actively buy anime?

After all, for a great deal figures they are based on anime shows, or other mediums such as manga or light novels that were adapted to anime.

In my case, I actually do not buy that many official anime releases, mostly because of all other things I do buy such as games and figures which together with my other financial obligations don't leave a lot of money for anime. I end up buying a handful at best every year, when I do is the shows that I really, really enjoyed and would like to revisit. I like the idea of being able to rewatch them on my nice fancy TV which is considerably bigger and has a better picture than my monitor in gorgeous Blu-ray quality.

At least for American releases, I do not mind waiting a bit after the show has come out. After all I already watched them and the reason I want to buy them is because I liked them, I don't think I could simply buy shows blindly. The prices that I can get through Amazon and Rightstuf are low enough that is not a bank breaking investment like in Japan and those two outlets tend to have discounts and sales throughout the year. I don't mind paying a bit higher as with Denpa Onna where I can get nice extras such as both Blu-ray and DVD discs, nicely designed packaging and this book that has episode commentaries, staff interviews and character design drawings.

Plus, besides buying merchandise such as figures this is another nice way to support the industry, indirectly as it might be. Although I do worry how profitable this endeavour might be, I once read an article giving sales numbers which were much, much lower than I would have ever imagined for the American domestic anime market.

I wanna hear about you, do you buy anime? Is it domestic releases or do you go straight for Japanese releases? Do you watch a show because of figures you bought or vice versa, do you buy figures because you watched the show?

Fate T. Harlaown - Summer Holiday Bikini Babe

Hey all. Although summer has been over for a couple of days now, it's still pretty damn hot here so to me it's still summer. So that means more swimsuits! I get the feeling I have way too many swimsuit figures now... I mean sure sexy bodies in skimpy outfits are nice but I kinda miss the flair of, you know, clothes.

Amiami Sold out at the moment

I've been wanting a figure of Fate when she's all grown up for a while, but I had not been happy with anything I saw. For a while I considered getting Good Smile's bikini Fate but I think her face there is kinda goofy. For some reason everyone seems to portray Fate as either pissed off or shying away in a corner, and that's just not how my image of her is.

This figure portrays fate as being more confident than many of the ones I've seen. The hand on the hip, the sunglasses and the smile make her come close to how I imagine her personality to be.

I was still not completely satisfied with her look, she looked kind of plain compared to her Nanoha figure counterpart. However, I have a good opinion of Alter and their Fate reproductions, loli Fate is probably still my favorite figure, so I went ahead and ordered this Fate.

I had low expectations to tell you the truth, it's probably because of this that I got blown away from my first impression with her.

In person she looks a lot better, you can appreciate all the curves and little dimples. I don't think the promo shots do it justice. Sadly, after the initial shock, I came to see some of the flaws in her. It seems I have really high expectations from Alter haha.

I have a couple of complaints about the hair. She has a couple of little extensions or something that seem to be kinda just be stuck on. It seems like they could have a better job to seamlessly integrate them. There's also a big seam line between her fringe and the rest of the hair which is a bit unsightly. And finally, she has a piece of hair on the right side of her bangs that is separated from the rest, this is very delicate, I almost tore the poor thing off.

Shading and sculpting on the hair is great however. It flows down and to the side with really nice movement. Alter figures usually have really nice hair and I can see where they were going with Fate, it just seems like they could have done a better job.

Her back has a really nice amount of detail.  you can see the grooves left by the muscles along all of her back aswell as the butt-cheek one,s peeking out slightly out of the top of the bikini. You'll also notice how the swimsuit slightly digs into her at both the bikini  top's string and the bottom's. You rarely get to see her back because of all the hair, but both are really nice.

This shot reminds me that in the original Illustration these figures are based off, fate was supposed to be bending down on a wall with her butt up in the air. I guess that pose would be a bit awkward for a figure. This photo and the one bellow were edited by Chag from Hobby Hovel.

This is the first time I shoot in RAW format, in direct sunlight and using a flash to do fill lighting. It was a big learning experience since I'm usually in a more controlled environment haha. First time I use editing software to tweak my pics as well, it works out much better with the RAW file! Jeez, Fate has great legs.

Her base is pretty simple but I think it works very well. No issues getting her on and off the base.

Those look kind of uncomfortable for the beach. Who cares! They're sexy and stylish!

This picture was taken by a friend I was with, this post seems to have a lot of collaboration heh. Anyway You can see the meticulous paint work along with some dust, I don't think you're meant to go this close.

A bit of the detail in the side ties.

She comes with the jacket from the illustration in one hand. I just noticed it's sleeveless.

Picture by my friend. Her stomach is not completely flat, she has a but of curves there as well I think is very nice and gives her a more womanly feel. You can see how the swimsuit floats a bit between her abs and her pelvic bones, and how it digs a bit into her, great moe points! You can also see how her left hand is actually fused with her hip, I don't really like that.

Navel fan service. Oh and the sunglasses are transparent.

Pic by my friend and if it seems like I picked the most perverted shots to borrow from him, you'd be right. You can see some really nice curves of the bust in this one, as well as a bit of her perkiness.

I took this shot for 2 purposes. To show that her boobs kind of overflow from the cups of the top (from both sides), and to pander to the armpit fetishist.

The top straps are slightly thicker than I would expect. Also nice cleavage in this one.

The good

  • Sculpt and shading are top-notch
  • Expression of face and body is great
  • Lots of fetish points
  • The big scale helps to appreciated the sculpting of the sexy body

The bad

  • Assembly quality a bit shoddy, especially because of a big seam line on her hair and extensions
  • Swimsuit is overpainted in some areas but it's almost negligible
  • I would have liked if her eyes were a bit more vivid

Who should buy this?

I'd recommend her to Fate fans for sure. She gives off an  aesthetic demeanor so if you're into that you'd probably like her. If you're a fan of blondes she's great if you can ignore the flaws.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with Fate. I get the feeling that Alter was slacking off with her but the end product is pretty good but not perfect and she's probably my favorite rendition of grown-up fate.

Till next time~

The Anime Interrogation Game

I outright ignore the anime blogsphere these days so I get to miss all these occasionally interesting endevours to get to know more about your fellow bloggers. Since Fab tagged me and exilehero and he is a really nice guy I figured we would participate in this anime interrogation game.

This originated from some person named Iso from some aniblog called Nabel.

This works out like this:

  • You are allowed to ask 5 questions, after which you can tag up to 5 bloggers by hyper-linking to their blog; 5 questions because it’s not too many to flood another blogger and occupy too much of his/her time, but yet a large enough number to ask your most important questions, and 5 bloggers to avoid spamming. Hence, prioritize your questions, and who you wish to ask!
  • Those tagged are obliged to answer the questions in a blog post, and after which, they are entitled to create their own 5 questions and tag 5 other bloggers, so on and so forth. You are allowed to tag the person that tagged you in the first place. Also, copy and paste this section on your blog so others can understand how the game goes.
  • In the case where a blogger strongly refuses to answer a question, he/she must instead post a nice anime image, wallpaper or cosplay picture, et cetera in response to that question.
  • To make things interesting, a blogger can include wildcards in his/her 5 questions by placing an asterisk, (*), after which those tagged are obliged to reveal something interesting about themselves that others did not previously know. There is no limit to the number of asterisks one can place (which means there can be up to 5 wildcard questions).
  • Anyone can feel free to start the game; you don’t necessarily need someone to tag you. Just create your 5 questions and tag your 5 people of choice. However, the catch is that you must answer your own 5 questions as well.
  • To potentially prevent an endless game, this round of games will end on the 8th September 2012, 12pm JST (GMT +9). After which, no more bloggers can tag others to answer their questions.

These are the questions that were asked:

How do you choose the anime you watch?

I usually start by looking at the handy seasonal charts that contain all of the shows, OVAs and movies airing and releasing during that season. If there is a sequel to show I liked from a past season or the next iteration in a long running series I enjoy those get automatically added to my watch list. This is followed by checking out what my preferred studios are doing, if the premise sounds interesting I will give them a go. I also take a look at the voice actors, this is probably the primary reason I watched some shows lately. If there is staff whose work I enjoyed before, directors, producers, writers, etc. also increases my chances of checking the show out.

Then comes the social factor, if my lovely animu friends express interest in a show or give me a recommendation it occasionally gives me incentives to watch it.

Finally the most important thing, I ignore what the overly vocal anime internet fans say. Every season I continuously watch and very much enjoy shows that are labeled as bad for some trivial or arbitrary reason.

I don't really go out of my way to look for anime to watch every season but there's several things that get me to watch an anime.

First of all I look at what studio animated the show. I know SHAFT does crazy trippy things, and Kyoto Animation does more down to earth adaptations etc. So depending on what I'm feeling like I might give whatever show they're doing a try.

Another way I get into shows is by looking at online discussions and posts. If I see a lot of people talking about a show I might get curious and see what it's about. This also includes old shows, I don't remember when I saw someone talk about Big O but it looked interesting and I started watching it not to long ago.

One way that will get me to NOT watch the show is character designs. If I don't like how the show looks it's really hard for me to care for it, man that sounds really shallow hahaha.

Which anime cliche annoys you the most or which one do you like the most?

One that has bothered me for a while now is the hot blooded idiot protagonist. I don't mind hot blooded at all, I think it's really cool and given the right kind of idiot might be charming. However, what I keep seeing is protagonists with a complete lack of comprehension of the most basic common knowledge, act in a way that I find it impossible to believe they are as old as they claim. I can't stand seeing older teenagers or young adults acting as if they were a grade schooler who knows nothing about how the world works.

Hey this is cheating that's like 2 questions in 1 :p. I'll answer both even if there's a "or" in there.

I recently started reading a manga (NiseKoi) with very clear examples of this so that might be influencing my answers haha.

I dislike the childhood friend love interest cliche. I'm just gonna assume it's a girl for ease of writing but I guess it could apply to guys as well. The thing is that most of the time the only relevant thing she has is that she has known the protagonist for a long time. I don't mind when the childhood friend has other qualities, like being really stubborn (like in Sora no Otoshimono), but when her whole personality is just being a nice girl the protagonist knows from when they were kids, it gets boring. If the protagonist just met her, he probably wouldn't even bat an eye to her.

The cliche I like the most is probably the tsundere. Even though I've seen it countless times I still can't get enough of it hahaha.

It often the case that the girl is too damn proud to accept that she has any kind of romantics feelings. I like the internal conflict and the shy/embarrassed expressions that this produces. I especially like it if the artist is good and can make really cute embarrassing faces, or really silly ones haha. I like that the girl is generally strong, a far cry from a damsel in distress, but she also has a girly side that she rarely shows to anyone. I like this sort of contrasting personality traits a lot.

Where you ever caught during an embarrassing scene while watching anime?

Does getting caught fapping to hentai count?

I don't think I've ever felt really embarrassed from something in anime, but maybe I tend to block embarrassing moments out of my memory hahaha.

The lucky star opening is really damn embarrassing though. It's like completely unrestricted otaku shock wave. It's really offsetting to anyone that's not into anime.

Oh I remembered something embarrassing that's anime related. I went to Japan to study the language and was in the classroom. The topic of your favorite anime came up and I really didn't want to admit I was really into watching, because of the social stigma that can come with it. Especially since I had no idea how my classmates or the teacher would react. So I went with the safe bet and said I like Hayao Miyazaki movies. Getting asked that in that particular situation was pretty embarrassing hahaha.

Is there a certain character from a certain scene in an anime/manga you would like to be adapted into a figure?

Not really from anime/manga but I want Nu-13 from BlazBlue, preferably in her Murakumo Armor. ALTER MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Also, more Touhou figmas. MAX FACTORY MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Too many! hahaha. Well with the news of the new Phoenix Wright game I'd like some Phoenix and Maya figmas. Hell almost any character from the games would be a nice figma.

On the topic of figmas, I'd like a Cirno one, and maybe a Yukari and Yuyuko. Any more Touhou figmas would be nice

I'd like a scale figure based on Udon-ya, Ishikei, or several other doujin artists. But because they're kinda ecchi I doubt they'll make any.

I'd also like a figure of Yuuko, from Tosogare X Amnesia, other than the beach queen's they announced. But I think it's really hard to capture the style of the Manga. I wasn't quite happy how the anime turned out haha.

In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of anime compared to western media?

My biggest problem with western media is that it tends to stay within the confines of predefined archetypes. If it's fantasy it's Dungeons & Dragons or Lord of the Rings, if it's sci-fi it's Star Wars and Star Trek and so forth, of course big generalizations on my part but still. There will always be stuff like elves and dwarves, dragons and sorcery, rubber faced aliens, beam guns, etc. everything is too samey. With Japanese media, everyone creates their own rules and universe to play with rather than using the same rules everyone agrees to.

The other big problem I have is that western shows never really have a conclusion to build to, they are written in a way to make them last indefinitely. This is greatly noticeable when a show gets cancelled or lasts longer than the original premise would allow to.

That is not to say anime does not fall under this either. I don't mind so much but it seems the same but that it feels like creators are just going through the motions whether it is anime or western media.

It's been a while since I saw any western media that's not movies heh.

The last thing I watched was Game of Thrones and I really enjoyed that. But I think that series is a little different from how things are normally handled. Fist off it's based on a series of books so the story is already written. But they do a really good job of setting the world and expanding the characters. And a lot of developments that happen are really interesting. There's also lots of topless girls, so in a way it's like anime fan service haha, there's no random light beams in real life though.

I think western shows focus more on an overarching story more than on the characters. When I think of Heroes or Lost I end up thinking on more of the mystery or conflict they are trying to solve. The characters are just pawns to develop the story. Rarely do I see writers go into a lot of detail for the characters. In anime you end up knowing a lot of bout the characters, like what food they like, or if they have some sort of ritual when they wake up, if they hate carrots for some reason etc. Sometimes the whole show is centered just on the characters with no real story to move along. This is still interesting because you still get to see characters interacting and being silly and what not.

This character driven narrative is probably why I like anime over your average Western show. Game of Thrones is interesting to me because they put the characters in such situations that both advance the story and develop the character. For example at one point a Eddard Stark, a friend of the king, moves to the capital to help him manage the city. The city is very corrupt and he struggles because of it. You get to see that he's a very honest man and how the city is plotting against himself and the king. It seems I praised Game of Thrones too much heh.

I also think that western media seems to think that you have to be completely obvious with everything you say and do. There's very little subtlety.

Since the deadline was on the 8th we wont tag anyone. The End.

Good Smile Company Arsene - Sexy Dominatrix

Toys: The miracle buds that swell from the hearts of the chosen. Some flowers are born pure, while others bloom laced with poison. The age of detectives. These two flowers wage a war to see which is the most beautiful: the great detectives or the gentleman thieves. Tantei Opera Milky Holmes!

Arsene is from Milky Holmes as I've already said. She is the a Gentleman Thief and is the main antagonist to the idiot detective quartet that is Milky Holmes. She is probably the only competent person in the show and tends to get angry at everyone else for being such fools. She has a dominatix feel about her, you can tell by her outfit. "Kiss the ground beneath my feet like the worm you are". She is definetly a bloom laced with poison.

When I saw that they were making an Arsene figure I just had to get her. The promo pictures looked great and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to push Milky Holmes on to people :D. This is the first Good Smile Company scaled figure I've gotten and I’m quite pleased.

Here you can see her pretty face and hair. For some reason she wears a ridiculously small crown that I had not noticed before getting the figure. It’s a hairband with the tiny crown attached, very practical! Her hair is also very nice, notice the abundance of curls and drill. I like hair drills, they give an air of refinement, or nobility even.

Arsene has two great assets and she’s not afraid to put them to good use. Even in the anime they make a lot of boing boing jokes. She is pushing them up slightly with her elbow glove toting arm. This is one of her best points!

Another delicious point is her navel. It has that vertical line along the abdomen thing that I find very sexy. Her sexy abs are complimented with the crisscrossing laces that continue with the dominatrix theme.

I don't know what the buckles are for, but this outfit is pretty outrageous. I was kinda disapointed with the left hand though. In some promo pics it shows her clearly digging into her stocking and that was one of the best and sexiest details, but on my Arsene the fingers kinda stick out.

Nevertheless Arsene still oozes with sexy appeal.

Thigh highs are the best!

Simple, sturdy base.

And of course, you can take the mask off to reveal her beautiful purple eyes. Though this doesn't really happen in the anime. The type mask has this specific name but it escapes me. To take it off it works much like a Figma, you take off her fringe, I almost expected the face to be swapable, but alas.

She comes with a second mask without pegs for her to wield.

Arsene is pretty much made of sexy appeal. There's so much going on with her, yet she still remains classy, you know, being a Gentleman Thief and all. Milky Holmes is great and you should watch it. I know people just can't take it seriously but it's not meant to be!

Till next time!

Alter Fate Testarossa Summer Dress

This time we'll take a look at Alter's loli Feito-chan. Though this Fate is a little different from many other figures out there because she is sporting casual clothes instead of the magical girl "armor" that she's typically depicted in.

First off all the figure info. She's by Alter, first figure I get from them. There's actually 2 version of this figure, this one I got, and a limited release version. The limited release version's right arm is held closer to the chest.

She's based on the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st version of fate. Though I hardly remember her in something other than her magical girl outfit.

I got her from Figure Haven, though I think I bought the last one they had, they had a black Friday deal. I sorta got her on a whim when I saw her and was awestruck by her beautiful face. For some reason I think Fate is really cute when she's in casual clothing.

Every time I go outside with a figure bad stuff seems to happens. It was really cold and windy today when we went to take the photos.

The reflector I was using was blow by the wind straight into Fate. She was about to fall a very nasty fall, but managed to catch her. However by doing so she got some scratches as you can see in this photo.

She makes a pair with a certain other Alter figure.

Yuri goggles. Though I think they're just very good friends really.

She comes with Bardiche, her self aware weapon robot thing. I guess the proper term is Intelligent Device, and it's in Stand By Mode.

And it's pointy on the other end. Though I don't remember seeing her use that end for anything.

Fate has nice legs.

When I was penetrating Fate I realized she was a very tight. I had a hard time putting it in and I thought she would get stretched out or maybe even break something. There was no other choice but to put some more force behind it and I was able to slide it in. Yet it was a very tight fit. So take care when inserting Bardiche into her hands as it may take some effort.

I can't complain about her not using the other end anymore.

You can see the frills of her dress in this one. Also the detail of her belt buckle bracelet, very clean. She also arrived with a little smudge on her leg.

Did I mention she has really nice legs? I tend to get distracted by this a lot lately.

Ever heard the expression, "Fate's ass is the miracle of the universe"? Well it applies here.

Here you can see her boots and base. Boots are very glossy, you can even make out reflections. Base is nice and simple transparent. Base matches with Nanoha's.

The end.
